OPACITY is a relative measure of how much particulate matter is present in smoke.
A beam of light is passed through the smoke in the stack and a sensor (photometer) measures the percentage of light blocked by the particles in the smoke... the higher the percentage, then the greater the amount of particulates.
Micro-particles in smoke are known to cause adverse health effects. PM10 and PM2.5 have set limits for human exposure.
Provincial Regulation 507 prohibits stack emissions of over 20% opacity IF the emission exceeds 6 minutes duration.
At ASI, coke oven stacks are continuously monitored (and recorded) for stack opacity.
